Plan a wheelchair-accessible kitchen with turning space, knee clearance, reachable storage, appliances, counters, controls, lighting, and safe work zones.

An accessible kitchen is not created by lowering one counter. The route into the room, turning space, approach direction, knee and toe clearance, appliance doors, controls, storage reach, heat safety, and the user’s individual chair all interact. Regulations provide essential minimums, but the best plan comes from measuring the actual user and testing complete cooking tasks with an occupational therapist or accessibility professional where possible.

Begin With the User and Local Standards

Record chair width, length, footrest projection, turning method, reach range, transfer needs, strength, and whether another person assists. Verify current local accessibility rules; common reference numbers are not universal approvals. Model the actual chair and a companion in Aedifex. Plan an Unbroken Accessible Route

The approach from entry, dining area, and pantry must avoid steps, narrow pinch points, loose rugs, and projecting handles. A clear route around 90 cm is a common starting point, but passing and turning need more. Keep the main turning zone away from a hot oven door. If the kitchen is a galley, confirm where the user reverses or turns instead of assuming the aisle alone solves circulation.

Provide Useful Knee and Toe Clearance

A seated prep area needs open knee space, protected plumbing, and a work surface matched to the user—not merely an empty cabinet bay. Include toe clearance so the chair approaches closely. At a sink, insulate hot pipes and use a shallow bowl if it improves reach. Removable base cabinets can support future adaptation, but the finished condition must remain stable and safe.

Put Work Zones Within Reach

Arrange refrigerator, landing, sink, prep, cooking, and serving in a short sequence. Provide a heat-resistant landing surface beside the cooktop and oven so hot dishes never travel across the lap. Select Appliances by Operation, Not Appearance

Induction can reduce open-flame risk and keeps surrounding surfaces cooler, but controls must be readable and reachable. Drawer dishwashers or raised conventional units may reduce bending. Make Storage Reachable

Use full-extension drawers, pull-down upper fittings, shallow shelves, and pantry pull-outs instead of deep fixed cupboards. Daily items belong within the user’s comfortable reach, not at the theoretical maximum. Avoid heavy objects overhead. D-shaped handles are easier for many hands than small knobs, and touch latches can be difficult if they require precise force. Test every mechanism with the intended user.

Coordinate Counters and Shared Use

One continuous lowered counter may not suit a household with standing and seated cooks. Use two work heights or an adjustable section, while preserving landing and cleanup continuity. Rounded corners reduce injury at turning points. Contrasting edges can help users with low vision. Leave enough room for a second cook without forcing them to reach over the seated user or cross the hot zone.

Improve Controls, Light, and Safety

Place outlets, switches, shutoffs, and appliance controls at accessible positions away from hot surfaces. Use lever taps or touch controls appropriate to the user and provide anti-scald protection. Layer bright, glare-controlled task lighting across counters and inside storage. Visual, audible, or connected alerts can support users with different sensory needs. Keep a fire extinguisher and emergency exit route reachable.

Simulate a Complete Meal

Test entering, retrieving refrigerated food, washing, cutting, moving a hot pan, loading the dishwasher, storing leftovers, and taking waste out. Draw every door and drawer open during its step. Prototype the Critical Workstation

Create an adjustable mockup of the sink or prep station before cabinetry is fabricated. Test surface height, knee depth, toe space, faucet reach, outlet position, task light, and the location of knives and waste with the actual chair. Repeat after several minutes, because a position that works briefly may cause shoulder fatigue during a full meal. Invite the regular standing cook to test the adjacent zone at the same time.
